Wedding Cakes, Take Two

Either I have cake on the mind or a lot to say about wedding cakes, probably both. I was looking through The Knot and found some very useful tips when it comes to wedding cakes. So I figured I would share them all with you because let's face it, everybody remembers the cake! Here are just some of the tips they share, to read the rest go to The Knot - Wedding Cakes.

Wedding Cake Tips:

1. Taste the Cake (who in their right mind would pass up an opportunity like this?!?)
2. Select a Style - it is recommended that style be dealt with after the dress styles and reception decor are chosen in order to tie in the theme of your decor/style.

3. Size It Up - generally, three tiers will serve 50 to 100 guests (five tiers for 200 guests or more)

4. Price It Out - cakes are often priced by the slice ranging from $1.50 to $15 per slice.

5. Price Savers - order a smaller cake (or even fake styrofoam cake) to display at the reception and have sheet cakes in back to cut and serve to your guests.

6. Frosting - Buttercream or Foundant? Foundant is more expensive than buttercream. While buttercream icing is usually better tasting, foundant icing has a very smooth, perfected look.

7. Consider the Weather - stay away from whipped icing if having an outdoor wedding in a hot climate.

8. Coordinate Delivery - allow plenty of time for delivery and set up. Not all cakes are delivered in their final form and some cakes even require refrigeration.

9. Go Mini (a mini cake for each guest) - while very cute,
it can be expensive. Each cake would require a box and unfortunately boxes often don't come in the same size as the mini cake.

I didn't realize that there was so much to think about when it came to a wedding cake but boy I was wrong! There is a lot to consider when choosing that perfect cake! At least when I go to pick out my cake I will be a little more educated and informed of the options/decisions after reading that article. Well, now that I am done on my cake rant I am going to go make some Funfetti Cupcakes (Rich's favorite)!!! Enjoy the fun cake pictures below (all pictures are courtesy of Brides.com)

I LOVE that cupcake cake!! So beautiful, and it would make an adorable centerpiece! That way people could enjoy the cake whenever they like and wouldn't have to wait for it to be served!
